U.S. government officially opens safe drinking water project in Sarband district
Sarband District, Tajikistan, March 1, 2012 – U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Sarah Penhune and USAID/Central Asian Republics Regional Mission Director Erin E. McKee met community members of Sarband Town, Sarband District during the opening ceremony for the Tajikistan Safe Drinking Water project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Community members assembled to celebrate this new system which will provide safe drinking water to 14,921 people. The ceremony included a performance by local schoolchildren on the importance of safe drinking water and good hygiene to stay healthy.

Project is financed by International Development Association of World Bank- the Manager of Grant trust fund of European Union for emergency prevention of crisis in food prices. Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and International Development Association was signed on September 03, 2010 and was endorsed by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan on October 22, 2010, Order No. 949. Total Grant amount is 7 416 750 EURO (or equivalent of 10 012 612 USD).
